Youth Sunday is a highlight of our calendar, coinciding with the Church’s feast of Christ the King and the end of the liturgical year. We began holding annual events in 2017.
In 2019, we held events on the Saturday and Sunday. These days give us an opportunity to explore our place in the Church as young disciples of Jesus, to make Him known with passion and creativity, and have a meaningful impact on our peers and communities.
Sunday is our annual young adults’ event, where the Catholic communities from Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester, Bournemouth and Reading, and other 18-35 year olds gather for Mass, food and formation hosted by Bishop Philip.
For many students their chaplaincy is their parish, full of unique experiences and life changing experiences. Youth Sunday is about sharing and celebrating these experiences and inspiring each other participate fully in these communities.
Preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation is a challenging and rewarding process. Going on retreat takes us away from everyday life, into a unique, creative space where we can explore how God is calling us into deeper understanding and relationship with Him.
While in our parishes we mostly receive catechesis and formation which relates directly to the sacrament, retreats will give you a different perspective; creating a sort of “tool kit” to help you make the most of your preparation, and understand what the next steps are once you’ve celebrated the sacrament.
On a pre-confirmation retreat you can expect great food, music and speakers, as well as the opportunity to meet other young people from around the diocese on the same journey as you – all led by our incredible young team!
Next event: Spring 2020
It’s all in your hands now! The Church is full of amazing opportunities both within and outside of Portsmouth Diocese. This is your chance to reflect on your journey so far and consider what the next steps are both as an individual and a community.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been confirmed in the last few weeks, or if it’s been a few years. If you’re under 18 and confirmed you’re eligible to attend, and you’re guaranteed to meet other people your age. For many of us, the best decisions and closest friendships we make begin in places just like this.
At the heart of post-confirmation retreats is the centrality of Jesus in the Eucharist: in our Church, relationships and whole lives, modelled and guided by Our Lady. The Sacraments of Initiation are mountain-top experiences, yet they only mark the beginning of the journey that the Lord is calling us on!
Altar Servers are a unique community within the diocese, called to a special role in the heart of our parishes by assisting our priests in Holy Mass, and leading the congregation in reverence and action.
The Annual Day for Altar Servers attracts around 100 people from around the diocese; some just beginning their ministry at age 7, all the way up to people in their 80s, highlighting the fact that for some, serving at Mass is a lifelong vocation.
The day itself is a celebration of the ministry with lots of fun and games and (weather permitting!) a picnic lunch. Importantly, we engage in age-appropriate formation with refreshers of tasks and attitudes expected of servers for under 12s, exploring the layers of vocation that serving leads us to with ages 12-16, and equipping for confident leadership in the parish with ages 16+.
