The Reredos

Behind the Altar in the Bishop's Chapel, you can see the reredos. It is a copy of the Seven Sacraments Altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1450), now in the Royal Museum in Antwerp.

On the left panel are Baptism, Confirmation and Reconciliation and on the right the Anointing of the Sick, Ordination and Matrimony.

The central panel, dominated by the crucifixion, is dedicated to the Sacrifice of the Mass, the Holy Eucharist. Angels hover over each sacrament with scrolls, their cloths colour-matched to the sacraments. It is a busy church scene!

Pray with Bishop Philip

There are many ways to pray during the Holy Hour and at Mass; here's a few prayer resources to help you in the difficult days and weeks ahead.

Spiritual Communion

Prayer of St Alphonsus Liguori

For the times in the days and weeks ahead where you will be unable to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion, you can still reach out to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament with an act of Spiritual Communion. When you are watching a livestream of the Mass, at the time when you would normally receive Communion you can instead say this prayer (written by the 18th Century Italian Saint Alphonsus Liguori):

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer for Renewal of the Diocese

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, we beg you to change us, to convert us and to make us holy. Fill us with a deeper faith, hope and love for you. Send into our hearts the cleansing fire of the Holy Spirit and powerfully renew all the clergy, religious and laity of our Diocese.

Unite us in love and respect for one another and unify us as your one, holy people. Grant us a new passion and zeal for the Catholic Faith, for mission, outreach and service.

Help us to proclaim your Gospel generously to the poor and needy that many more souls may be saved by finding their way to you in your Church. May Mary Immaculate help us. May St Edmund of Abingdon and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati pray for us. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Michael

the Archangel

Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all the wicked spirits, who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
