Part time: 21 hours per week [which can be structured on a flexible basis]
Contract type: Part-time, interim, for an expected period of three to six months
Salary: £25-£30k FTE
St. Peter and The Winchester Martyrs is a thriving parish within the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth (a charitable incorporated organisation). The main church of St. Peter is located in Jewry Street, central Winchester together with the Pastoral Centre which provides parish offices, meeting rooms, hall and kitchen facilities. There are three other churches within the parish, at Olivers Battery, Alresford and Stockbridge. The parish operates through two priests, assisted by two deacons, a small team of staff, and supplemented by volunteer ministries. It is one of the largest parishes in the Diocese with an annual income of over £500,000.
As well as the four churches and Pastoral Centre facilities, the parish is responsible for upkeep of two heritage buildings on the Jewry Street site (the Milner Hall and White House) and has 18 rental properties in the area (17 residential, 1 commercial offices) which are generally let on commercial terms through letting agents and provide an important source of income in addition to offertory and planned giving by parishioners. When not required for parish activities, the halls and meeting rooms may be hired out to third parties to generate further income.
The parish operates as a self-accounting entity in accordance with an annual budget and subject to Diocesan operating procedures and accounting requirements. Most operational matters are delegated to and funded by the parish, including accounting, general administration and facilities management and maintenance. Support services such as HR, payroll, IT, estate management, finance and banking are provided by the Diocesan central office in Portsmouth (covered within a levy charge). The Diocese has recently implemented Xero accounting software in all its parishes including St. Peter and The Winchester Martyrs.
The parish is currently in the process of reorganising its staff team.
This has created an immediate requirement for an experienced and suitably qualified Finance Assistant on a part-time, interim basis to cover the core, routine accounting and related requirements for an expected period of three to six months.
The role covers all those tasks related to accurate and timely completion of the parish’s Xero accounts each month to trial-balance stage.
