How we became a Fairtrade Diocese

Fairtrade status seems to be something that many parishes want.

Last year we surveyed all parishes on their level of Fairtrade commitment. And very many thanks if you were among the 80% who replied - showing the very high level of interest.

We knew that the past couple of years have seen a great surge in support for Fairtrade products. Many hundreds are now available. Their quality and value means that many supermarkets and other retailers stock them. Just look for the symbol! And many thousands of people enjoy them daily.

But the strength of our own enthusiasm in the diocese came as a pleasant surprise. Most parishes warmed to the idea:

Over 50% of the parishes which replied already met the criteria to be a Fairtrade parish - and simply needed to register with the Fairtrade Foundation.

On Saturday 4 February, we held a Diocesan Fairtrade day.

We regularly update our database of Fairtrade parishes and worshipping communities. Click here for the latest information.

We also reported to the Diocesan Pastoral Council at their May meeting. Click here for the PowerPoint presentation.

Please do not hesitate to write to the Working Party if you require any further clarification or wish to share any suggestions or concerns we need to address.
