GOVERNING A CATHOLIC SCHOOL – WHAT THIS MEANS

A training session for new governors in Catholic schools, especially foundation governors

This session, which follows on from LEA induction courses for new governors, explores the added dimension of being a governor in a Church school and covers the following topics:

  • Background information on voluntary aided Church schools, including Trust Deeds and Trusteeship
  • The ethos of a Catholic school
  • The roles and responsibilities of governors, particularly foundation governors
  • Information on religious education and school worship
  • The inspection of Church schools
  • The role of the diocese in supporting you

EVALUATING AND DEVELOPING YOUR SCHOOL’S CATHOLIC CHARACTER

An interactive training session which will enable governors to consider:

  • the essential character of the Catholic school
  • their role in maintaining and developing it
  • how this key aspect of school life is monitored and evaluated.

Group work, discussion and the opportunity to work with colleagues from other schools on simulated evaluation tasks using materials from “The Self-Review and Evaluation of Religious Education by Schools in the Diocese of Portsmouth”

DEVELOPING THE ROLE OF GOVERNOR IN A CATHOLIC SCHOOL

This interactive session provides the opportunity to work with governors of other Catholic schools to

  • Review your year(s) in office
  • Identify the current key issues for governors of Catholic Schools
  • Consider development of your role as governor
  • Consider how the Department for Schools can help and support you in your role

THE ROLE OF CHAIR IN A CATHOLIC SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY

For Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Governors and Chairs of Committees of the Governing Body.

An interactive session, including group work and discussions, which will provide the opportunity for participants to:

  • consider the national context within which governing bodies operate
  • identify the key issues for governors of Catholic schools
  • work through some practical examples with governors from other Catholic schools
  • identify the skills and abilities used by chairs in carrying out their role

  • The school in its national and local context
  • The Catholic church's expectations of its schools and headteachers
  • The current situation: a SWOT analysis
  • The person specification
  • The advertisement
  • Selection activities
  • Programming activities and interviews
  • Preparing interview questions
