What is World Youth Day?

In 1985, to celebrate the UN International Year of Youth, Pope John Paul II came up with an idea of a regular international gathering of young people that would embrace , foster and celebrate their faith. The first World Youth Day (WYD) took place on Palm Sunday in Rome and has been celebrated every year since.

Every two or three years there is an international gathering and it is these events that have captured the imagination - in Manila (1995) over 4 million people attended the WYD Mass! WYD offers young Catholics across the world a chance to connect with each other and with God. It is an opportunity to share faith and to realise how huge and diverse the Church is. It is an ideal time to journey with Christ and to renew the Church.
