World Youth Day

In 1985, to celebrate the UN International Year of Youth, Pope John Paul II came up with an idea of a regular international gathering of young people that would embrace, foster and celebrate their faith. The first World Youth day (WYD) took place on Palm Sunday in Rome and has been celebrated every year since.
Every two or three years there is an international gathering and it is these events that have captured the imagination - In Manila (1995) over 4 million people attended the WYD Mass!
WYD offers young Catholics across the world a chance to connect with each other and with God. It is an opportunity to share faith and to realise how huge and diverse the Church is. It is an ideal time to journey with Christ and to renew the Church.

God our Father, we place the preparation for World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, in your hands.
Bless and protect Pope Benedict and all the pastors of the Church.
Enlighten and strengthen all those preparing for World Youth Day.
Grant them wisdom and strength to carry out their work.
Help us all to prepare deeply for this pilgrimage of faith.
Amen

Lord Jesus Christ, before your ascension, you promised to be with your Church until the end of time.
Bless and multiply the efforts of everyone working towards World Youth Day.
Make us, the young people of the world, your co-workers in the work of redemption, so that we may take root and build in Christ, Amen

Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life, pour out your grace upon the lands of Spain.
Open the hearts of the Spanish people to the receive all young people who will come to World Youth Day.
Grant to those who attend, a conversion in their lives.
Make them strong in faith, hope and charity.
Amen.

Mary, Immaculate Mother, patroness of Spain, pray for us.
