 Training courses for parish cantors

CantorThe ministry of the cantor is essential at all celebrations with music, whether with more traditional music or more contemporary music. A major part of the cantor's ministry is being able to elicit a sung response from the people, and leading them in sung prayer. The diocese has recently been offering workshops for those who would never consider themselves to be cantors but who are nevertheless interested in helping to lead the people in song. You don't have to be a brilliant musician to be a leader of song; you just have to want to help the people sing! These evenings begin with the basics, leaving technical training for later on.

Courses for cantors can be arranged locally, on a parish or pastoral areabasis. Areas covered include using your voice, use of gesture, what to say to the people, how to teach new music, singing psalms, the cantor during Mass, being a minister of music.

The next cantors' day will be on 24 April at English Martyrs, Reading
