Why have Pastoral Areas?

"We are about discerning how we can become more effective disciples of the Lord and what we need to do so that the Gospel can be more powerfully proclaimed."

(Bishop Crispian's Pastoral Letter January 2006)

In Pastoral Areas, we are committed to:

bullet

Ensuring that Sunday Mass is accessible to as many people as possible on a local basis

bullet

Affirming and supporting priests in the essentials of their pastoral and sacramental ministry

bullet

Maintaining the distinct identity of smaller pastoral groupings e.g. churches, mass centres, schools, hospitals

bullet

Enabling the continuing growth of hospital, prison and school chaplaincy teams, which may include priests, deacons, religious and lay people

bullet

Developing more effective catechesis for all in order to nourish the faith life of each individual

bullet

Providing appropriate pastoral care with a particular emphasis on the elderly, sick and housebound

bullet

Sharing gifts, talents and expertise on a wider basis

bullet

Creating opportunities for the further development of leadership skills by a larger group of people

bullet

Promoting stewardship e.g. the appropriate, efficient and coordinated use of resources, especially people and buildings

bullet

Recognising the importance of ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue and shared initiatives

bullet

Giving priority to how we live and share our faith, especially evangelisation and involvement in the local community

bullet

Encouraging each community to be a place that is open and welcoming to all
