Marriage Preparation

‘The complexity of today’s society and the challenges faced by the family require a greater effort on the part of the whole christian community in preparing those who are about to be married… In this regard the Synod Fathers agreed on the need to involve the entire community more extensively by stressing the witness of families themselves and by grounding marriage preparation in the process of Christian initiation by bringing out the connection between marriage, baptism and the sacraments. The Fathers also spoke of the need for specific programmes of marriage preparation aimed at giving couples a genuine experience of participation in ecclesial life and a complete introduction to various aspects of family life’.

Testimony from Charlotte W

"Before we began the course, I wondered whether or not I would be welcomed as a non-Catholic. However, on the first session, someone else said that they were a Protestant, which was a bit of relief, as it meant I wasn’t the only one! So that made me feel more at ease.

Around the middle of the course, the subject of non-Catholics was mentioned and it was established that Catholics do welcome other Christian denominations and are very happy if they want to convert. This did make me think a bit. Niall and I have been attending Mass together throughout our relationship and I do like a lot of aspects of Catholicism. It makes me a little sad when I can’t take part in Communion. But I suppose you can’t help what you were born into! It would be nice to fully be a part of things.

I felt very welcomed though, and can’t fault the course as I felt very accepted. It wasn’t too hard to understand a lot of the practices which were talked about as I’ve been attending Mass and I just ask Niall anything I don’t understand. Sorry if this is a bit long-winded!

Thank you again for delivering your session. It wasn’t an easy subject to talk to about but I think you guys did it really well!"

SmartLoving feedback

 Marriage preparation

Engaged Couple:

‘Prior to starting the marriage preparation course I felt quite apprehensive, not because I had any views against it but because I felt that I would be out of my depth. Not having much knowledge of the Catholic faith I felt as if I would not always understand what was being taught or referred to.

Arriving for week 1 we were made to feel so welcome and included, the teaching of the Smartloving course is very relaxed and comfortable which I feel helps someone like myself who is not Catholic to enjoy it.

The "homework" sections encouraged us to make time in our week to sit at the dining table for dinner without the TV and talk to each other and give each other full attention when reading from our workbooks and sharing notes.

I look forward to each Friday evening now. Myself and Mat have been together for 6years (in a couple of weeks)…We're really enjoying our marriage preparation course. It's good to be part of a group in similar situations to us and to be able to relate to 'everyday life' as a couple. The course has encouraged us to open up more about our feelings and priorities what really matters in our lives - Each other. Our 'homework' has encouraged us to spend at least one meal time a week sat at the dining table with no TV or background noise. Allowing us to spend quality time together.

A Parish Priest

‘Thanks for inviting me to the Marriage Preparation Seminar.

I was very happy to attend the first session (Marriage as a Mission). What struck me most was the sharing of your witness and mission of God’s Love in both of you. You are lively speakers.

Your talk was more interesting than …I have known families who have domestic problems because they did not have time for each other.’

Mentor Couple who deliver Smart Loving have this to say

‘Alex and I would like to take this opportunity to give you some feedback regarding the Marriage Preparation Course.

We found this experience very thought provoking, and whilst we were there in support of our engaged couples, it made us explore our own relationship.

We would like to say thanks for the support that you have given us before, during and after the training sessions. Thanks to your sessions we learned to practice Smart Loving in our own relationship. We feel very fortunate to have been chosen to be part of this course .... We now understand that it’s ok not to be perfect and with God in our lives we can accept and love each other as we are.’
