Fr Franz and Fr Patsy greet the Princess Royal
Port chaplain, Fr Patsy Foley and Rev Frans Sahetapy, British and International Sailors' Society Port Chaplain, met with The Princess Royal when she visited Southampton Seafarers’ Centre on Tuesday 17 October, to attend the Annual Meeting of Volunteers and Supporters of the Centre.

The Princess Royal asked Frans how long he has worked in Southampton and they spoke about Indonesia with the Princess Royal saying she had visited. On her departure she spoke of the hard work involved in being a Chaplain in the port and wished him well.

A short service in the centre chapel followed led by the ecumenical chaplaincy team, during which Rev Frans read. This was his first Royal engagement since arriving from Belewan in Indonesia.

The Princess was introduced to over 70 volunteers and supporters, seafarers, representatives of the port, shipping companies and organisations that contribute financially to the Centre. She took the time to individually speak to them all about their support and connection to the centre and its work in the Port of Southampton. The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to commemorate her visit, commenting that Southampton was a model for future collaboration of the organisations in establishing other centres in the UK.

Her Royal Highness also received a cheque on behalf of the Seafarers’ Centre for £5000 from Mr Tony McDonald, Vice-Chairman of The Southampton Shipowners’ Association as part of the Associations’ significant charitable contribution to the Centre.

Captain John Hughes, chairman of Trustees of Centres for Seafarers said,
“The visit was an enormous success and a real endorsement by the Princess Royal of the work done by so many volunteers at the centre.”

The Centre is an ecumenical partnership between the Apostleship of the Sea, British & International Sailors’ Society and The Mission to Seafarers and is established as a separate charity called Centres for Seafarers. Each Society having a full time Chaplain based in the Centre. The Centre is a busy focus for visiting seafarers of all nationalities, with some 1400 using the Centre each month. The refurbished Centre was opened by Mrs Mary Fagan JP, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, in the former Mission to Seafarers building in Queens Terrace, Southampton in April last year.
