Portsmouth Diocese E-News

Tuesday 13th June 2017 - Issue 141 (2017/22)

Dear all,
The Convocation of the clergy of the diocese is this week!

Please pray for me and for all the priests and deacons of the diocese that the Father will fill us with His love, renewing us with the grace of the Holy Spirit, reconnecting us with the joy of our original call (vocation) from Jesus Christ to serve Him as a priest/deacon.

Please also pray for Fr James Mallon who will be addressing the Convocation and for Dr Caroline Farey from the School of the Annunciation who will be our Facilitator.

This coming Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi - the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

This short video highlights that the most profound place we will ever encounter Jesus on this earth is in the Eucharist.

Clergy Convocation

Fr. James Mallon, a Canadian parish priest and internationally-known speaker on the work of new evangelisation and parish renewal will be addressing the Convocation of Clergy over the next three days. His book Divine Renovation: Bringing your Parish from Maintenance to Missionis a best seller, now in its eighth edition in English, its second in French and newly translated into Spanish. Often humorous and colourful, in it Mallon draws on his extensive pastoral experience. In the light of the teaching of Popes St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, he challenges us to rethink parish life in a ‘missionary mode’ and to focus all our energies on forming missionary-disciples.

Clergy moves

I have made a number of new clergy appointments in the diocese, which take effect from 8th September 2017.

I thank these priests for all they have done and for being willing to make these moves.

Please pray that in the new appointments the Lord will bless these pastors and their communities abundantly.

You can read more about these moves here.

Pray for our Members of Parliament

Please pray for all those elected to the new Parliament at last week's General Election, especially those of the 31 constituencies which cover our diocese. Pray that our Lord will direct their hearts and minds according to his will for the true peace and freedom of all; that they may not serve for personal gain, but for the good of all whom they have been elected to serve.

Prayer for those in Public Office

Almighty, ever-living God, in whose hand lies every human heart and the rights of peoples, look with favour, we pray, on those who govern with authority over us, that throughout the whole world, the prosperity of peoples, the assurance of peace, and freedom of religion may through your gift be made secure. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday Reflections

In the latest of our series of reflections from Jennifer Geach, our focus this week is on last Sunday's Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

Welcome to Worship in Avon Stour

Everyone is invited to Avon Stour Pastoral Area’s next 'Welcome to Worship' event.

Some comments from people who went to the last one they held:

  • The Welcome to Worship evening...was wonderful… truly a renewing spiritual experience not to be missed... I hope             there will be more such evenings.
  • It was excellent…The quiet prayer part was very powerful.
  • It was lovely to have a quiet evening of contemplation. I really enjoyed the music praise and the theme for the                    evening of knocking as a theme for meditation. I think the balance of praise and quiet time was right. I would                    certainly recommend the evenings to anyone.
  • ...such an enjoyable and worthwhile experience... The fact that a large part of the time was spent singing                            uplifting hymns meant that you really couldn’t help but enjoy it. In addition I liked the ‘no pressure’ side to the                    evening, where you could partake in as much or little as you wanted.

Why not join them and give it a try - and why not take along a friend or two, Christian or otherwise?!
