Portsmouth Diocese E-News

Thursday 1st June 2017 - Issue 139 (2017/20)
Dear All,

We are now in the month of June – time flies! But this is a beautiful month dedicated to the Heart of Christ. Here is a short prayer I have come across.

During this month, please pray for all our clergy and people. Pray for all the active clergy gathering at Windsor for the Convocation. Please remember too all the young of our diocese who are being confirmed at this time, as well as Ansel and Rob, soon to be ordained priests, and James, soon to be ordained a deacon.

May the Love of the Heart of Christ fill you with joy.

Convocation of Clergy - jut two weeks to go!

I want to ask you to pray for a special intention.

Please pray for the success of the ‘Convocation of Clergy’ for our priests and deacons in active ministry. It is almost 20 years since Bishop Crispian held a similar Convocation of Clergy in Bournemouth and over 12 years since the Go Out and Bear Fruit conference with laity and clergy. In the time since, things have moved on and our situation has developed further, which is why it seemed a good idea to have another gathering. Dr. Caroline Farey from the School of the Annunciation will be the facilitator. I have asked Fr. Mallon to discuss Divine Renovation and to help us think about what the shift from maintenance to mission means. For instance, how might we better prepare people for the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion)? And what models of leadership are appropriate to the Church today with the new focus on mission and evangelisation?

Sharing the Joy of the Gospel – Day of Prayer for the New Evangelisation

Saturday 3rd June, 10am-3pm

St. Edward’s Church, 191-193 Winchester Road, Chandlers Ford SO53 2DU.

The diocese will be hosting a day of prayer for the New Evangelisation, beginning with Mass at 10am. Throughout the day, there will be the opportunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. There will also be a prayer workshop either side of lunch (please bring your own), centred on the theme of “using the gifts of the Holy Spirit”. You are welcome to come for all or just some of the day. Even if you cannot join us, please take time that day to pray for the New Evangelisation in our diocese – it is essential that all our efforts are founded on a firm bedrock of prayer.

Called and Gifted

The Called and Gifted website has recently been updated with details of the twenty-four charisms relating to the programme and is being constantly updated with witness testimonies from people across the diocese who have been identified with particular charisms.

In our first look at these charisms we focus on Encouragement.

Encouragement: Nurtures or fosters others through presence and words of comfort, encouragement and counsel.

Manchester bombing victims remembered

On Tuesday 30th May, scores of the faithful congregated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Waterlooville, in solidarity with the people of Manchester, for a Memorial Mass for the victims of the Manchester bombing.

It was a deeply meaningful and personal occasion when we remembered each of the victims of the bombing by name. As an act of Remembrance, as each victim's name was read out, a candle was lit. We joined together in saying the De Profundis for the departed and afterwards the whole congregation lit individual candles and placed them in front of the altar, in silent prayer.  You can read more here.

Ascension Sunday Walk of Witness

On Ascension Sunday last a small group of six people set out from St. Joseph’s Church in Christchurch to walk to Hengistbury Head which is the highest point in the area.

The parish called it the “Christchurch Camino” but fundamentally they wanted to witness to the continued presence of Jesus with us “until the end of time”.

Oratorians arrive in Bournemouth

The Oratorians have arrived in Bournemouth!

Their arrival was delayed by the sad illness and death of Father David Hutton, back in March, but now the time has come to commence this great adventure to establish the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri at the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the heart of this city.

Morning Prayer by the seaside

As part of the global wave of prayer and to be a visible presence in the world to passers-by of Christ’s church; a group of parishioners from Our Lady Queen of Peace gathered together at Southbourne beach to say Morning Prayer on the Feast day of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to pray for God's spirit to open the ears, eyes and hearts of people everywhere.

The Community of Our Lady of Walsingham needs your help...

The Community of Our Lady of Walsingham needs your help in order to have their first convent. Until now they have survived thanks to the kindness of diocesan and shrine bodies who have provided them with temporary accommodation; yet they they do not have the space they need to welcome new vocations so that the Community can really grow and flourish in its work for the Church and God's Kingdom.

Intercessory Prayer Team

Through the Called & Gifted process, a number of people in our Diocese have been able to discern that they have the charism of Intercessory Prayer. Some have expressed the wish to gather together in small groups from time to time, or be connected with each other, and so a Diocesan Intercessory prayer network has been established.

The intercessions could include prayers for our Diocese and all the people in it (from the laity to our Bishop, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Religious) as well as all the various needs of the world.

Inter-religious calendar: Ramadan

Ramadan has started – the holy month for Muslims that is marked by fasting, alms-giving, increased prayer, and study of the Qur’an. I am sure that your Muslim family or friends would appreciate your good wishes  – wishing them a “Happy Ramadan” is fine – it is a really special months for most Muslims, which involves a lot of socialising, and time spent with family and friends (the “iftar”, fast-breaking, can be a big occasion, and more than usually the sharing of food is encouraged), as well as a “spiritual re-charge” – and “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Ramadan Kareem” are more traditional greetings.
