Prayers for the people of Manchester

Although born in Altrincham in Cheshire, I nevertheless think of Manchester as my home city. So I was deeply shocked by the tragedy that unfolded yesterday at the Manchester Arena. I have offered Mass for the repose of the victims, for the recovery of the injured, for all families and friends affected by this atrocity and also for the forgiveness of those who perpetrated it. I know Manchester Victoria station well and the Arena which is built above the tracks. I have written to Bishop John Arnold, the Bishop of Salford, to express the prayers and sympathy of all the clergy and people of the Diocese of Portsmouth (see here).

Let us pray for an end to violence and terrorism caused by extremist fundamentalism.

Thy Kingdom Come - Preparing for Pentecost

Novena to the Holy Spirit

The Great Feast of Pentecost will soon be upon us, when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit given to Mary and the Apostles, and so also to the early Church. After Ascension, those first disciples were told by Jesus not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there “for what the Lord had promised” (Acts 1:4). We too, then, are invited to “wait for what the Lord has promised us”, namely the Holy Spirit. Please would you consider offering a Novena to the Holy Spirit from Friday 26th May to Saturday 3rd June for the New Evangelisation in our diocese. There are many you could use. Here's one suggestion.

Thy Kingdom Come

This is a global prayer movement, which invites Christians around the world to pray at this
time for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. As Catholics, we can support this initiative
with our Pentecost Novena, Prayer of the Faithful and an encouragement for us to pray, as we
normally do, with the particular intention for our loved ones to come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Sharing the Joy of the Gospel – Day of Prayer for the New Evangelisation

Saturday 3rd June, 10am-3pm

St. Edward’s Church, 191-193 Winchester Road, Chandlers Ford SO53 2DU.

The diocese will be hosting a day of prayer for the New Evangelisation, beginning with Mass at 10am. Throughout the day, there will be the opportunity to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. There will also be a prayer workshop either side of lunch (please bring your own), centred on the theme of “using the gifts of the Holy Spirit”. You are welcome to come for all or just some of the day. Even if you cannot join us, please take time that day to pray for the New Evangelisation in our diocese – it is essential that all our efforts are founded on a firm bedrock of prayer.

Pray for our students

Please pray for all our young people preparing to sit exams in schools, colleges and universities across the Diocese. As we approach the Feast of Pentecost, ask the Holy Spirit to help them:

Let us pray for our school, college and university students: that the Holy Spirit will guide their minds and quieten their hearts throughout this exam season.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Students might like to use this prayer themselves:

Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator, true source of light and fountain of wisdom! Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect, dissipate the darkness which covers me, that of sin and of ignorance. Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion. This I ask through Jesus Christ, true God and true man, living and reigning with You and the Father, forever and ever. Amen.

St Anne's is Outstanding!

St Anne’s in Southampton were delighted to be rated outstanding in all areas by the Diocesan Validation team recently.  It was a pleasure to share with colleagues from other Diocesan secondary schools the life of this vibrant school for a couple of days.  School leaders were delighted that the team recognised that all members of the community feel valued and nurtured, whether student or adult and that each day starts for all in prayer, often following the lectio divinamodel.

The full report can be read here.

Please continue to pray for the work of this and all our schools!

Annual Report of the Catholic Education Service 2016

The CES Management Committee is keen that the CES continues to be fully transparent and accountable for its use of the levy to the dioceses that support it.  The Management Committee has therefore asked that the work of the CES is reported on an annual basis so that dioceses can be assured that the funding is being well used in order to fulfil our functions.

The  Annual Report of the Catholic Education Service for 2016 outlines the work that the CES has undertaken during 2016.

General Election - Our Common Future

As Catholics, Pope Francis reminds us that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and calls us to join a new dialogue about the future.

This election must look to the kind of society we wish to create for ourselves and to pass on to our children. It’s also about the world we want to see for our brothers and sisters worldwide, especially those who are poorest and most vulnerable.

Further to my recent ten questions, here is a useful briefing from CAFOD and Caritas.

Two hours - £3000

A team of Lyndhurst parishioners have raised over £3000 for charity in just two hours by hosting a Plant and Cake Sale.

The event was organised by Henry Rosenvinge and a team of volunteers who also support CAFOD.  All proceeds from the day will go to a CAFOD project supported by Our Lady's, Connect2: Ethiopia, which increases the ability of farmers to work the land successfully in the rural Ethiopian community of Sebeya.

Jersey celebrates Fatima Centenary

Following Mass in St Thomas in Jersey over 600 parishioners participated in the outdoor procession around the streets of St Helier to honour Our Lady who appeared to the three children in Fatima 100 years ago.

The clergy led the procession together with First Holy Communion children, the Knights of St Columba and Portuguese, Polish and English  parishioners.  A special and memorable evening.

Intercessory Prayer Team

Through the Called & Gifted process, a number of people in our Diocese have been able to discern that they have the charism of Intercessory Prayer. Some have expressed the wish to gather together in small groups from time to time, or be connected with each other, and so a Diocesan Intercessory prayer network has been established.

The intercessions could include prayers for our Diocese and all the people in it (from the laity to our Bishop, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Religious) as well as all the various needs of the world.
