CAFOD is the official overseas aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, set up by the Bishop's Conference in 1962. It is one of the major relief and development agencies in the UK, and part of the Caritas Internationalis Confederation, a worldwide network of Catholic relief and development organisations. CAFOD believes that all human beings have a right to dignity and respect and that the world's resources are a gift to be shared equally by all men and women, whatever their race, nationality or religion.

CAFOD works throughout the developing world, working alongside people in need to reduce poverty and bring about sustainable change through development and humanitarian programmes in healthcare, education, food production, livelihoods, economic advocacy and HIV/AIDS; in emergency situations, providing immediate relief but also staying on to support long-term programmes to help rebuild people's lives; to increase understanding of the causes of poverty and injustice and encourage the Catholic community to embrace values, attitudes and lifestyles that are rooted in the Gospel; to challenge governments and international bodies to adopt policies that promote social justice and end poverty.
